The Best Moments Of The 2016 SAG Awards : The Winners!

On Saturday night, we saw the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards also known as the 2016 SAG Awards. See who won in the most glamourous way!

Saturday night was the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, or as most people call it the 2016 SAG awards! The awards ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and is always one of the best awards shows to watch IMHO. This is no other award shows like the 2016 SAG awards, it has no hosts just a narrator who introduces the presenters.  All of the awards at the 2016 SAG awards are voted on by other members of the Screen Actors Guild organization, so it’s other actors and people in “the biz” who are voting on these awards. It’s a little bit of a popularity contest, but it also means something really big when your fellow actors stand up and say “we loved your work.” These awards are given to honor outstanding movie and TV performances and are one more step towards receiving an Oscar.

The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards opened with various actors/actresses talking about what it means to be an actor. We heard from Jeffrey Tambor from Transparent, Kunal Nayyar from The Big Bang Theory, Rami Malek from Mr. Robot and Queen Latifah from Bessie.

There were two awards that were handed out before the ceremony. Mad Max: Fury Road won for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, and Game of Thrones won for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

OutStanding Performances

*Winners names have been bolded. For a full list of nominees and winners, scroll to the bottom.

Kristen Wiig from The Spoils Before Dying and Jon Hamm from Mad Men presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series to Uzo Aduba for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Orange is the New Black. I am an avid watcher of this show, and she is one of my favorite characters.

Jason Bateman from Arrested Development and Sarah Silverman from I Smile Back presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series to Jeffrey Tambor for his role as Maura Pfefferman in Transparent. This is his first win in this category.

The five nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture will be showcased by cast members who have roles in the movie, throughout the show. First up is the movie The Big Short, presented by Christian Bale, who plays Dr. Michael Burry and Steve Carrell, who plays Mark Baum.

Patricia Arquette from CSI: Cyber and J.K. Simmons from the Spider-man Trilogy presented the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series to the cast of Orange is the New Black. I love this show and so glad they won this award, well deserved.

Jeremy Renner from The Avengers movies presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role to Alicia Vikander for her role as Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl. This is her first nomination and first win. Well deserved.

The next movie showcased for the 2016 SAG awards is Straight Outta Compton, presented by Jason Mitchell, who plays Eazy-E, O’Shea Jackson Jr., who plays Ice Cube and Corey Hawkins, who plays Dr. Dre.

Saoirse Ronan from Brooklyn presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role to Idris Elba for his role as Commandant in Beasts of No Nation.

Anna Faris from Mom and Anthony Mackie from Captain America and Avengers: Age of Ultron presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie to Queen Latifah for her role as Bessie in Bessie Smith. I don’t really like Queen Latifah as an actress and was hoping Nicole Kidman would have won.

The third movie showcased is Spotlight, presented by Mark Ruffalo, who plays Michael Rezendes, Rachel McAdams, who plays Sacha Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton, who plays Water “Robby” Robinson.

Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay from Room presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie to Idris Elba for his role as Luther in DCI John Luther. This is his second win of the night. Good for him!

The next showcased movie is Trumbo, presented by Bryan Cranston, playing Dalton Trumbo, Diane Lane, playing Cleo Fincher and Helen Mirren, playing Hedda Hopper.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler present Carol Burnett with The Life Achievement Award, which was such a great nod to female comedy actresses. This award is given to those who showcase “outstanding achievement in fostering the finest ideals of the acting profession.” Past recipients include Frank Sinatra in 1972, Jack Lemmon in 1989, Angela Lansbury in 1996 and Julie Andrews in 2006. Carol Burnett was a solid pick for the 2016 SAG Awards this year.

Carol Burnett was born April 26, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas. She has appeared in 66 television shows, 19 movies and 13 Broadway shows throughout her career. Other honors she has received include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1975, induction into the Television Hall of Fame in 1985 and recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003. She’s known most for her infamous comedy variety show, The Carol Burnett Show. See her inspirational speech, can you believe her show was almost called Here’s Agnes and that the studio told her that comedy and variety were more of a man’s game? Luckily for us, she helped paved the way for some of the amazing comedy actresses we see today.

More Of The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Taye Diggs from Murder in the First and Eva Longoria from Telenova presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series to Viola Davis for her role as Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder. I have never seen this show, but I love Viola Davis as an actress. She has so much talent! Now I need to catch up on How To Get Away With Murder on Netflix.

The movie Beasts of No Nation is showcased by actors Abraham Attah, playing Agu and Idris Elba, playing Commandant.

Priyanka Chopra from Quantico and Pedro Pascal from Game of Thrones presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series to Kevin Spacey for his role as Francis Underwood in House of Cards. OMG! I am excited right now. He is one of my favorite actors ever. Oh and I love House of Cards.

Susan Sarandon paid a tribute to those actors/actresses we have lost including Omar Sharif, Taylor Negron, Anne Meara, Donna Douglas, Christopher Lee, Dick Van Patten, David Bowie, Natalie Cole, Al Molinaro, David Canary, Leonard Nimoy and Alan Rickman. There are so many great talents lost this year at the 2016 SAG awards. I can’t believe Professor Snape is really gone!?!

Julia Louis Dreyfus from Veep and Keegan Michael Key from Tomorrowland presented the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series to the cast of Downtown Abbey. I was a bit surprised to see Game of Thrones passed over TBH, but Downtown Abbey is pretty good.

Outstanding Performance For A Female And Male Actor

Eddie Redmayne from The Danish Girl presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role to Brie Larson for her role as Joy “Ma” Newsome in Room. I have to say I am a bit disappointed here. I really wanted Cate Blanchett to win since she is an amazing actress.

Julianne Moore from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & Part 2 presented the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role to (OMG) Leonardo DiCaprio for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant. OMG! I actually got up from the couch and jumped up and down. I have absolutely loved him since his role as Arnie Grape in the 1993 movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. And then there was Titanic, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond and Shutter Island. I could go on and on. So excited!

Demi Moore presented the final award of the 2016 SAG awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture to the cast of Spotlight.
