Dunkirk Movie Quotes

I literally spent 4 ½ hours researching quotes for this movie because the director, Christopher Nolan, is a pro at kept details about his movies top secret. Here’s what I found!

7-Commander Bolton, as a voiceover, in the opening of the movie trailer:

Bolton- “What has happened is a colossal military disaster. We shall go on to the end. We shall never surrender.”

Commander Bolton is part of the British Royal Navy, pier master of the East Mole in Dunkirk Harbor and is played by actor Kenneth Branagh. The quote is part of Winston Churchill’s historic speech, titled We Shall Fight on the Beaches. Winston Churchill, who was the UK Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955, gave the speech to the UK’s Parliament House of Commons on June 4, 1940.

8-Conversation between Lieutenant Colonel Winnant and George:

Winnant- “The call went out. We have to go to Dunkirk. Ready on the stern line.”

George- “What are you doing? You know where we’re going.”

Winnant- “Into war, George.”

George- “I’ll be useful, sir.”

Lieutenant Colonel Winnant is part of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) and played by actor James D’Arcy. George is a crew member on the fictional Little Ship, Moonstone and played by actor Barry Keoghan.

9-Conversation between Collins and Farrier, as a fighter plane chases them:

Collins- “He’s on me.”

Farrier- “I’m on him.”

Collins is a fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force, flying a Supermarine Spitfire and played by actor Jack Lowden. Farrier, also a fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force, is played by actor Tom Hardy.

10-Conversation between a BEF (British Expeditionary Force) Officer and Dawcett:

Officer- “Where are we going?”

Dawcett- “Dunkirk.”

Officer- “I’m not going back. If we go there, we’ll all die. You’re weekend sailors- not the bloody Navy. You should be at home.”

Dawcett- “There’s no hiding from this, son. We have a job to do.”

Officer- “Turn it around!”

The BEF Officer, who was rescued at sea, is played by actor Cillian Murphy. Dawcett, an English civilian on the Moonstone, wants to help get soldiers off the Dunkirk beaches. Dawcett is played by actor Mark Rylance.

11-Commander Bolton, as a voiceover, in the closing of the movie trailer:

Bolton- “We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall never surrender.”
