Key Terms from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Hunger Games-

The Hunger Games is an annual event that was developed as a punishment for the rebellion of the Districts against the Capitol. Two youngsters are selected in each of the 12 Districts, one male and one female. They are chosen to fight in a savage and brutal fight to the death. This fight is broadcast live around the world. Only one person is supposed to live; meaning 23 participants are killed.

Mockingjay-

Mockingjay is a species of birds that are a result of a mutation process in the Capitol. The mutation is a combination of Jabberjays and Mockingbirds. They are considered a symbol of rebellion because their presence isn’t controlled by the Capitol.

Panem-

Panem is a country that is separated into 12 Districts and is overseen by a type of government known as totalitarian. The name comes from the Latin phrase, “Panem et Circenses,” which stands for a focus on superficial matters in public life as well as politics.

The Capitol-

The Capitol is the heart of Panem, all about luxury, wealth and power. The city features high-rise buildings, where cosmetic surgery is part of the norm and is ruled by President Snow.

Districts-

The Districts are the 12 regions that make up Panem and is responsible for giving material goods to the Capitol. The lower District numbers like District 1, District 2, etc. have wealthy citizens while the higher numbers like District 12 are poor.

Tributes-

The Tributes are the males and females that take part in The Hunger Games. They are between the ages of 12 to 18 and are chosen from a lottery. The winner of The Hunger Games gets prizes for its district including sugar, oil and grain for an entire year.

Arenas-

The arenas are where The Hunger Games are held. Each year, there is a different arena that hosts the games. When the games are completed, the arena they were held in becomes a historic site.

Boy with the Bread:

Peeta’s nickname. His family owned the bakery in District 12, and Peeta gave Katniss bread twice throughout the novels when she desperately needed it.

Careers:

Tributes who are lucky enough to live in Districts that have the means to prepare them for the Hunger Games. They spend their lives training.
