T2 Trainspotting Movie Quotes

T2 Trainspotting is an upcoming comedy, crime, drama movie that will hit theaters on March 17, 2017. It is a sequel to the 1996 movie titled Trainspotting and is based on the 2002 book titled Porno by Irvine Welsh. The 1996 movie, Trainspotting was based on the 1993 book of the same name, also by Irvine Welsh. Here are some great quotes from the movie T2 Trainspotting.

The Original “Choose Life” Monologue:

This is from the 1996 movie, Trainspotting! This is one of the great monologs in movie history. It was more than just a quote from the movie; it was pretty much THE defining quote. It’s a bleak look at what happens when you choose life, an addict’s rationalization. Why choose life when it’s so utterly drab, so monotonous?

“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a f***ing big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin can openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of f***ing fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the f*** you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing f***ing junk food into your mouth. Choose to rot away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f*****-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life . . . But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?”

The Updated “Choose Life” Monologue:

This is the updated Choose Life monolog from the 2017 T2 Trainspotting!  Instead of referencing compact disc players and electric tin can openers, the newer version references Facebook and Instagram. It’s not just the tech that got updated, though. The ending is very different. This time, he really IS choosing life.

“Choose life. Choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and hope that someone, somewhere cares. Choose to look up old flames, wishing you’d done it all differently. And choose watching history repeat itself. Choose your future. Choose reality TV, slut-shaming, revenge porn. Choose a zero-hour contract, a two-hour journey to work, and the same for your kids, only worse, and smother the pain with an unknown does, of an unknown drug made in somebody’s kitchen. And then, take a deep breath. You are an addict, so be addicted. Just be addicted to something else. Choose the ones you love. Choose your future. Choose life.”

A conversation between Daniel Murphy (Spud) and Mark Renton (Rent Boy):

Spud- “Missed you mate.”

Renton- “I missed you too, Spud.”

The pair hadn’t seen each other in 20 years.

Conversation between Simon Williamson (Sick Boy) and Francis Begbie (Franco):

Sick boy- “Hello, Franko.”

Franco- “Simon, I’m old.”

The buddies had not seen each other in 20 years. In the first movie, Trainspotting, Sick Boy was a con artist with no morals and a heroin addict, while Franco was a psychopathic heroin addict.

Quotes from the Book

Since the film hasn’t hit the States yet, we don’t have a ton of T2 Trainspotting movie quotes. Trust me, when it comes out I’ll be seeing it and I’ll update you! In the meantime, there are some truly great quotes from Porno, the book that the film is kind of sort of (but not exactly) based on. Here are a few that I really love:

“You can’t lie to your soul.”

“I’m more of a warrior than you’ll ever be. I believe in the class war. I believe in the battle of the sexes. I believe in my tribe. I believe in the righteous, intelligent clued-up section of the working classes against the brain-dead moronic masses as well as the mediocre, soulless bourgeoisie. I believe in punk rock. In northern soul. In acid house. In mod. In rock and roll. I also believe in pre commercial righteous, rap and hip hop. That’s my manifesto.”

“Money gives you the luxury of not caring about it. You can affect to find it crass and vulgar, but see how crass and vulgar it is when there’s none of it in your pocket.”

“Now I’ll be left alone, and that’s all you want, all you crave out of life: to be left alone while you get on with the business of interfering with others.”

I could probably go on and on, there are just so, so many great quotes from the book. I’m looking forward to seeing how many make it into the film.
