The Characters of the Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

September 8, 2015 By Olfa Turki 19 Comments

The Scorch Trials are about to begin! Around the world, the lucky few are already attending premiers of the brand new Maze Runner movie, the follow-up to the insanely awesome first one. At the end of that movie, our beloved Gladers escaped the maze only to discover that what awaited them on the outside was anything short of paradise. In fact, it was nothing like the world they left behind. Today, we’re talking a bit about the characters of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trial, but through their own words!

The Characters of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner has inspired fans of the young adult series since its release in 2010. Most of us found out about the strange world of the maze, WICKED and the webs of propaganda and deceit from the movies. Going back to the source of the fictitious world, here are some quotes from the novels themselves.

‘The betrayal meant he couldn’t trust her anymore, and his heart told him he couldn’t forgive her.’ -Thomas

Anyone familiar with the series will know that this is in reference to Thomas’ feeling for Teresa. Even though they have a telepathic bond her loyalties are to WICKED more than to Thomas. She repeatedly betrays him until he feels numb towards her even though he is unable to move on and love another.

‘I’ve kind of accepted it, in a way. That saving you was worth losing what we might’ve had.’ -Thomas on the irony that saving Teresa changed the nature of their relationship.

‘…looked just in time to see the rain start falling out as if the storm had finally decided to weep with shame for what it had done to them.’  The series has an air of poetry to it that is a relief from the brutality of the dystopian world.

‘He didn’t care about the others anymore. The chaos around him seemed to siphon away his humanity, turn him into an animal. All he wanted was to survive, make it to that building, get inside. Live. Gain another day.’  Survival is the driving motivation in the maze runner series. The protagonists are constantly subjected to trials so that the mad scientists at WICKED can try to map their brains and the result is trauma and hardship and death for the characters.

‘You’d think the little part about them supposedly killing us would be the attention getter.’ -Minho

Dashner has a dark sense of humor that perpetuates throughout the series. People who have been in survival situations are likely familiar with the theme of survivors laughing in the face of death. When things are bleak and dark humor is a strength and a coping mechanism that has served humanity well. Dashner shared this with those of us who would prefer to laugh in the face of death from our armchairs.
