When you have kids, sometimes it can be tough to take them to the store with you. They are likely to get bored, which can cause them to act out. But you can avoid this by helping them learn to entertain themselves. I do this by playing educational grocery shopping games for kids. This can be fun and educational as well as letting you get your shopping done!

Math Shopping Games
Shopping games for kids can include something as simple as math. With my toddler and preschooler, we practice our counting. We count everything from how many canned vegetables are on the shelves to the people in the store. I also point out the numbered aisle signs and we practice recognizing the digits. My daughter loves to count, so this keeps her very busy (although sometimes she can get really loud!)
If your kids are a bit older, you can practice adding, subtracting or using anything that they are learning in school and turning them into shopping games for kids.
Reading Games for Kids
If you are trying to teach your child to read, consider playing shopping games for kids that have to do with letters and words. While I was in the store with my oldest child, we looked over the packages and signs and sounded the words out. It was a great way for us to combine learning and fun while I got the grocery shopping done.
Depending on your child’s age, you can simply teach them letters or focus on words like I did. You could even practice spelling by asking them to spell “spaghetti” or another item on your list before you reach the aisle.
Memory
Like most things in life, everything takes practice. This includes memory and there are some great shopping games for kids that can help. As you are putting items in the cart, have them look in a new direction and tell you what items you already have and what else is on the list. At first this might be easy, but as you get more items into your cart it will become increasingly challenging.

Good ideas. Grocery shopping can get boring for little ones otherwise. My kids are older, so I have them help me decide which size of a product is a better value–comparing price vs how many ounces you get, etc. We also calculate cost before and after a coupon.

These ideas are great and variations of them work for kids of all ages. Mine are three but they love to pick an item from the list and go find it. I also make them “pay the cashier” so they understand that things must be paid for. I look forward to the day when they can do the shopping by themselves. Just a few years to go 😉 Thanks for sharing.

These are such great ways to keep kids entertained while shopping! I also do similar things with mine, and I love that one of our stores has little shopping carts just for kids, so I encourage them to follow along with me, with their own list and try to find their own items 🙂
