The Voice- Season 9-  Battle Rounds #3 Recap

Blaine Mitchell vs Blind Joe- Team Blake- Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger

Rehearsal: We learn that Blaine was an athlete, but injured his knee so choose a path in music. Blind Joe has been blind since birth. Blake advises Blaine that he has some pitch issues and Blind Joe needs to work on his phrasing.

Performance: Both of these performers are pretty much on the same page. While Blaine has a better tone, Blind Joe has a grittier voice. Pharrell liked how Blaine hit the high notes and he liked Joe’s soulfulness. Blake chooses Blind Joe as the battle winner. However, Adam steals Blaine.

Cassandra Robertson vs Viktor Kiraly- Team Adam- Nobody Knows by Tony Rich Project

Rehearsal:  We learn here that Cassandra became pregnant and put her career on hold to focus on motherhood. Viktor, moved back to Hungary at the age of 16, when his mom was diagnosed with cancer. Mentor Fogerty compliments the song’s harmony, after having them make a couple changes.

Performance: Viktor has some amazing talent compared to Cassandra. I mean she is really good, but I think that Viktor has so much more potential. I don’t think this will be a hard decision for Adam to make. Blake said Cassandra sounded like listening to a record while Pharrell said Viktor is an anomaly. Gwen said Cassandra was destined to be on stage. Of course, Adam chooses Viktor as the winner of this battle. No one steals Cassandra so she is eliminated.

Chase Kerby vs Korin Bukowski- Team Gwen- Samson by Regina Spektor

Rehearsal: Chase wants to make a career change, currently working at the family candy store. Korin comes from a smart family and has put her pre-med career on hold to try music. These are two very emotional singers so Gwen did a great job with the song choice.

Performance: Korin definitely stood out in this performance. It is like the song was written just for her. Chase didn’t do a stand-out performance, though. Korin also has great stage presence compared to Chase. Adam liked Chase’s voice, but he thought Korin was just captivating. Of course, Gwen chooses Korin as the battle winner. No one steals Chase so he is eliminated.

Evan McKeel vs Riley Biederer- Team Pharrell- Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder

Rehearsal: If you remember Evan from The Voice Season 9,  Blind Auditions, you know he was a 4-chair turn. He began singing in the church and Riley has been a YouTube performer since the age of 15. Pharrell said that Evan is natural, but he really doesn’t want to lose either one of them. However, Pharrell admits he shouldn’t have put the two of them together since it is a hard song to sing and they both deal with challenges singing it.

Performance: Evan has such great stage presence, has a terrific tone and is all-around a better performer. Riley wasn’t horrible, but she just is quite ready for the stage just yet. Gwen said that Evan’s stage presence is magic, Adam thought Evan did a great job pulling off a hard song and Blake complimented Evan on his Risky Business slide. As expected, Evan was chosen by Pharrell as the battle winner. But, Riley doesn’t lose out either since she is stolen by Gwen.

Braiden Sunshine vs Lyndsey Elm- Team Gwen- No One is to Blame by Howard Jones

Rehearsal: During rehearsal, we learn that Braiden was in band at the age of 9 with some of his buddies and Lyndsey left her job with the family business to pursue her love of music. Gwen and Selena Gomez were both impressed by the deep tone that Lyndsey has. Selena calls Braiden a powerhouse while Gwen likes his charisma. Braiden is somewhat nervous, I think while Lyndsey has taken the advice that Selena and Gwen gave her and has actually improved during rehearsals. I think that in a few years, Braiden will be awesome but just not right now, not today.

Performance: Well, I am a bit surprised by the performance. I didn’t expect Braiden to do all that well, but I expected Lyndsey to do much better than she did. Adam said that both singers had their moment, much like a tennis match. Blake was impressed with Braiden’s huge note. Gwen was impressed with Braiden’s high notes but she also loved the tone and control Lyndsey has. However, she chooses Braiden as the battle winner. No one steals Lyndsey so she is eliminated from the competition.

Andi and Alex vs Chance Pena- Team Adam- Wherever You Will Go by The Calling

Rehearsal: So, turns out Chance was working in the family business (I see that as a theme with these contestants) but his love is music. John Fogerty said that Chance was pure and that Andi and Alex were little angels. Adam tells them to get their harmony points by listening to Lady Antebellum.

Performance: Wow, tough choice that Adam has to make with this pairing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the one who loses is stolen by one of the other judges. Chance is sweet with a great tone and I think he will go far here, even has a decent shot at winning the competition. Blake loves Andi and Alex but he thinks Chance clearly won this battle. Pharrell also loved the twins but felt Chance had the lead with the vocals. Adam had a tough decision on this one, since he liked all three of them but in the end, chooses Andi and Alex as the winner of the battle. I am shocked, since I thought Chance stood out among the three. Of course, Chance isn’t going home since Blake steals him.
