Mother/Daughter Movies on Netflix

Mona Lisa Smile: Set in 1953, it is a drama about women of the time.  Julia Roberts is teaching “History of Art” at Wellesley College, a conservative women’s college in Massachusetts.  Roberts shakes things up a bit by actually teaching the girls and engaging them in thinking for themselves, rather than just marrying well.  There is some conflict, which, of course, happens around a room of strong-willed women, but it is a great movie!  I love movies that show women taking a stand and changing the status quo!  Also, set in my home state, and not far from where I went to college, so it pulls at my heartstrings.

13 Going On 30: Ever wished you could just hurry up and be an adult?  Jenna gets her wish on her thirteenth birthday.  She falls asleep in her closet after an evil prank by the mean girls in school (who she invited to her birthday party), and she wakes up thirty-years old and living in a Fifth Avenue apartment.  She discovers she has a great job working for a magazine she loved as a kid (which was just yesterday).  I am not giving any more away; you just have to watch.

Dear Dumb Diary: I have watched this with my daughter and my teenage stepdaughter.  This is a series of books that was made into a movie.  She writes in her diary about middle school, mean girls and of course, boys.  There is a chance her diary got read aloud in school (the horror!)  It is a must-see because it deals with things we all have and will deal with, or fear dealing with!

Mean Girls 2: There are mean girls in every school.  And in this school they are ‘The Plastics’.  There is no escaping them!  The daughter of a mechanic, Jo has dreams of attending the same college as her mother.  However, it is not something they can afford.  She is offered money for college if she befriends Abby, an outcast in school.  She accepts, as she sees no other way of being able to pay for school.  Things like this never go right.  Jo tried to give the money back, but the leader of The Plastics overheard this conversation and devised a plan to let everyone know.

Yours, Mine and Ours: Can you imagine living in a family with a total of 18 kids!?  Yea me either.  The kids range in age from 4 to 18 years old.  Back in the day Frank and Helen were high-school sweethearts.  They run into each other again at their 30-year high school reunion.  Both widowed and have kids of their own, they rekindle their flame.  You can imagine the craziness that ensues with that many kids under one roof!

I love watching movies with my daughter (she is only 6) but it is an easy way to open the conversation for some tough topics.   Plus I love the one-on-one girl time with her and I know she likes it too!  What are some of your favorite mother/daughter movies on Netflix?

  1. Believe it or not, I haven’t watched any of these movies, yet. lol Seems these movies are really perfect to watch and bond with your mom or daughter. I can’t wait to watch some of em with my mom. She’s more into Korean drama and movies, while I’m into watching Animè and reading Japanese and Korean comics (manga and manhwa/webtoon). I think she won’t mind watching some English movies once in a while. 🙂
