Before the main role of The Major was cast to Scarlett Johansson, the role was initially offered to Margot Robbie. However, that fell through when Robbie was instead cast in the role of Harley Quinn in the 2016 movie Suicide Squad.

The villain in the movie, Hideo Kuze, is actually the big bad from the second season of the Manga series. They opted to go with him because it made the story line a bit more personal to the characters.

This is the 2nd cyberpunk movie that Scarlett Johansson stars in. Her 1st role was in the 2005 movie The Island as Jordan Two Delta. Also, this is not Johansson’s first movie role where she appears nude. She also starred in the 2013 movie Under the Skin, where she played the role of Laura, an alien in human form.

Ghost in the Shell is based on the Japanese manga series of the same name. The manga series produced a Japanese media franchise, Ghost in the Shell, which consists of 3 books, 5 movies, 3 television series and 4 video games. The 2017 Ghost in the Shell is the 1st movie to be distributed in the United States, whereas the other 4 were distributed in Japan.

When Scarlett Johansson was cast in the lead role, there was major controversy. The reason for this was due to the fact that Major Motoko Kusanagi, in the Ghost in the Shell manga series, is Japanese and of course, Johansson is white. This month, Johansson responded to the critics, in an interview with Marie Claire, stating “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive. Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that—the weight of such a big property on my shoulders.”

This is the 2nd movie that Scarlett Johansson and Pilou Asbaek, who plays the role of Batou, have starred in together. In the 2014 movie, Lucy, Johansson played the leading role of Lucy, while Asbaek played the role of Richard.
